- Wednesday, August 30, 2006 Egypt: Naguib Mahfouz, the first Arab writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature, has died in an Egyptian hospital, according to news agencies. He was 94. Mahfouz, best known for his Cairo Trilogy, produced 50 novels, five plays, as well as numerous short stories and essays.
