Former England International John Fashanu warns Aston Villa player Gabriel Agbonlahor to ditch Engalnd and play for Nigeria.....
Former England International John Fashanu, recently warned upcoming premiership star, Gabriel Agbonlahor, to pledge his international future to Nigeria and forget about playing for England.
Agbonlahor, born to a Nigerian father and an Englishman mother, recently tuned down the request of Nigerian football authorities to play for their under 21 team, the Flying Eagles as he wanted to concentrate on playing for the England senior.
This is a decision that he would regret says Nigerian Fashanu, who too turned Nigeria and decided to play for his adopted country. However Fashanu only managed two caps for England and believes the same fate awaits the Aston Villa player. He urges the young winger to concentrate on playing for Nigeria and not make the same mistake he did.
Does Fashanu have a point here? We have seen several players deciding to play for European countries instead of their country of origin, some like Eusebio, Zinedine Zidane, Jean Tigana and Marcel Desailly have successful spells for their European nationals. However Fashanu himself, along side John Salako are some of the high profile players that failed to become regulars in their chosen teams. Is there a system that undervalues such players as Fashanu suggests? We would like to know, it’s your shout.
