When Atiku Abubakar, the current Vice President of Nigeria decided to go head to head against the current president Olusegun Obasanjo in the presidential primaries for the political part, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), this was seen as political suicide in many quarters. Atiku however withdraw his candidacy in the last minutes and sent emissaries to the President to ask for forgiveness.

One would have thought that would be the end of the matter and the both parties would be back in good terms. However the rivalry resurfaced again when the vice-president was very vocal in opposing a bid by Obasanjo’s supporters to amend the constitution so that he could run for a third term as the Nigerian president.

The bid failed but open war had been declared between the president’s camp and his vice –president, with claims and counter-claims of corruption and abuse of office. This came to a head when Atiku was suspended by his party, the PDP because he was being investigated the country’s anti-corruption body for allegations of corruption.

The suspension effectively prevents him from contesting the primaries for his party. Running under the PDP umbrella for president is generally assumed as a sure thing for the hot seat.

With the latest development, should Atiku forget about the presidency for now? Without the support of his party can he still launch a successful bid for the president? Even if he fails this time around, is there any hope for him ever taking seat at Aso Rock as the president of Nigeria. It is your shout, let us know what you think.
