Malawi versus Algeria 3-0
Off the field the Cup of Nations has been shrouded in controversy but on the field if the matches so far are to be a guide it is looking set to be one of the most spectacular ever. Malawi have never won a wonder a match at the Cup of Nations and World Cup bound Algeria looked set for a nice warm up and three points how little did they know.
The Algerian rout started earlier when an aerial ball saw Algerian goalkeeper Chaouchi misskick the ball to the chest of Esau Kanyenda who in a smart mover feinted to the left and laid it for team mate Russel Mwafulirwa to open scores from a difficult angle on the 17th lashing home from a tight angle.
Elvis Kafoteka then powered in a header to finish off a smart move from the Malawians on the left in the 34th minute.
Malawians kept their cool and returned in the second half to hit the third through David Banda. Thereafter it was the Flames all the way and they nearly added the fourth but Chiukepo Msowoya failed to capitalise on a blunder by Chaouchi.
Reacting to the match Rabah Saadane the Algerian coach blamed the weather saying "we were victims of heat and humidity, we would have loved to play a bit later. Also, my players were never in the game. I congratulate Malawi for playing simple and precise football. Today, we learnt a lesson in humility."
His Malawian counterpart Kinnah Phiri was more unsurprisingly a lot happier "we are outsiders in this competition. We played well and i congratulate my players. We did prepare well and we are reaping the fruits here.this is just the first match, there are two to go, if we maintain this balance, we can shock the world. I am also happy because this is Malawi's first ever victory in the Nations Cup"
