The World Cup hosts will be looking to improve their record against European teams, having recorded six straight defeats. But they do have an excellent chance to break this cycle against a Norway side totally devoid of confidence, and resting at rock bottom of their World Cup Qualifying group. South Africa’s last match against European opposition was a credible performance against Italy. Although Bafana went down to two late goals from the Italians, they showed that they can compete at the highest level.
With Blackburn’s Benni McCarthy withdrawn from the squad through injury, the threat up front will be provided by Bernard Parker. Parker has scored four goals in five games for the national team and recently signed for Serbian side Red Star Belgrade. The talented South African has knocked up two goals in his first five games for his new club as he looks to make his name on the European stage.
Other Europe-based South Africans looking to put one over on Norway include Aaron Mokoena of Blackburn, Steven Pienaar of Everton, Lance Davids of Djurgarden in Sweden, and Matthew Booth from Russian club Krylia Sovetov. Of these players, Pienaar is the one most likely to give Norway problems. It is expected that he will line up against Norway’s John Arne Riise, reprising some old Liverpool - Everton rivalries from Riise’s days at Anfield.
South Africa are hoping that their players who have European football experience can mould the national team into a side that play open, attractive football, but are also mindful of the various tactical nuances that are on display in the top European leagues. The game against Norway provides Bafana with an excellent opportunity to not only reverse their losing streak but to also further prepare for 2010.
