French-born Ghezzel is beginning to make his mark on top flight football after a few years in the lower leagues of French and Italian football. Although his goal on Saturday was only his third of the season, Ghezzel has demonstrated that he is not out of place in the Italy’s top division. The game against Catania highlighted his aerial ability and the six-footer showed off some neat touches too.
The week before this match, Catania had put four past Palermo and seemed well on their way to securing another season in La Liga. Siena, on the other hand were hovering dangerously close to the relegation zone and finding goals hard to come by. However, the form book seemed to be thrown out of the window in this fixture, as Siena romped home to victory.
The first goal came after just 9 minutes when Massimo Maccorone blasted a beauty of a shot from over 25 yards into the back of the Catania net to make it 1-0 to Siena. From this moment, the match became wide open with chances for both sides, yet somehow no goals were added prior to half-time.
In the second half, Catania attacked ferociously and because of this they left themselves wide open at the back. Ghezzel often found himself receiving the ball with only one or two defenders in front of him. After a couple of missed opportunities, the Algerian made Catania pay. He picked up the ball just inside the penalty area, took a touch, and then fired it into the roof of the net. It was an assured finish from a confident young footballer.
Minutes later Lukas Jarolim struck to make it 3-0 to Siena. The result does much to ease Ghezzel’s relegation fears. After so long playing in the lower league the Algerian will not fancy returning to them, but based on this performance his club should survive at least another season.
