It was meant to be the beginning of a new era for Morgan Tsvangirai, after years of struggle in opposition he had been sworn in as the Prime Minister of Zimbabwe, the MDC was on the up politically and he was finally getting a chance to put into place the policies the MDC had espoused.

Despite all the developments of the political front, the events of Friday, 6th of March are sure to haunt Morgan Tsvangirai for years to come. Tsvangirai and his wife of 21 years Susan were travelling to Buhera for party rally when their Toyota Land cruiser was hit by a truck travelling in the opposite direction.

The accident left Susan Tsvangirai dead and Morgan suffering injuries that required him to be hospitalised in Harare’s Avenues Hospital.

The truck which hit the Tsvangirai was owned by the US government agency USAID and the driver Chinoona Chimwanda was contracted to a project funded by the US and UK government. Chimwanda has since be arrested and is to be charges with ‘culpable homicide’

In the Zimabwean capital, Harare residents are still trying to get to grips with the news.
