Arsenal’s reputation for free-flowing football is well deserved. They play with verve and are consistently the best team to watch in the Premier League. The team is packed full of young, culturally diverse, and eager players desperate to make their mark in the football world. However, recently this team has racked up four consecutive 0-0 results in the Premier League and now sit outside of the qualification spaces for the Champions League.
On Tuesday night the Gunners travelled to the Midlands to face bottom of the table West Brom, hoping that they could find their scoring touch. Which they did, after only four minutes of the match.
As Togolese international Emmanuel Adebayor remains on the injured list, his place in the team has been handed to Nicklas Bendtner. The Dane opened the scoring after some calamitous West Brom defending gave him the opportunity to scuff a shot towards goal, and somehow under the body of ‘keeper, Scot Carson. West Brom did manage to equalise just three minutes later through a screamer from Chris Brunt and almost held Arsenal at bay till half-time.
With only five minutes to go before the break, West Brom proceeded to shoot themselves in both feet. A free-kick taken by new boy Andrei Arshavin found an unmarked Kolo Toure in the penalty area. The Ivorian made no mistake with his header and scored past the hapless Carson to make it 2-1 to Arsenal.
It was to get worse for the home team as a long ball from Toure inexplicably found its way to Bendtner who, when faced with only Carson to beat, slipped the ball home. The half and the game ended 3-1 to Arsenal. With only 10 games left of the season Wenger will be looking for more of the same from his experienced players, such as Toure. The Ivory Coast international is the team’s driving force, and if there is to be Champions League football at the Emirates next season, much rests on the strength of Kolo Toure.
