The death of the President of Guinea-Bissau, Joao ”Nino” Bernardo Viera who was killed by Soldiers on Monday, March 2 in the capital Bissau only hours after the Chief of Staff of the country’s army was also assassinated has left the nation in a state of confusion.
Following the President’s death military units were deployed across the capital leading to concerns that a coup had taken place, but the army has come out denying there was a coup and insisting they will respect “the constitutional order”.
However the army has failed to inspire confidence that they have a grip on events as army spokesman Captain Jose Zamora contracted himself in statements about the death of the President first stating that “President Viera was killed by groups of soldiers close to for Chief of staff Batista Tagme Na Wai” later retracting this to “The President was killed by unknown person”
Meanwhile seven days of mourning have been declared and commission of inquiry has been set up to investigate both the death of the President and the Army Chief. The speaker of the Guinea Bissau parliament Raimundo Pereira has been sworn in as the interim President.
