The disputed election of 2007 saw incumbent President Mwai Kibaki declared the winner despite allegations of electoral fraud. The resulting post-election violence saw over 1,000 people murdered, and over 600,000 people displaced. The worst violence occurred along the Rift Valley.
On the 28th February 2008, former United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan mediated a power sharing agreement to halt the violence, which also called for a tribunal to investigate the suggestion that the violence was planned by the government. So far, the tribunal has not been convened, leaving many Kenyans still looking for justice.
