Afro Teddy is one of Ethiopia's most popular pop stars and in May last year was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to six years in prison. The charges were brought against Afro Teddy, real name Tewodros Kassahun, after an incident in which a homeless man was hit and killed by a BMW said to have been driven by the pop star.
A court of appeal sitting in Addis Ababa has now reduced that sentence to two years on appeal. The appeal judge, Mr Justice Dagne Melaku while upholding the guilty verdict reduced the sentence from six years to two - on the grounds that the victim had been seen lying drunk and unconscious in the road before the accident - and that the police had failed to move him to safety.
The singer has already spent nearly a year in jail and with an allowance for good behaviour he should now be free in less than a year.
