Angola’s Institute of Veterinary Services which is part of the country’s ministry of Agriculture has announced efforts to prevent the importation of Pork products from the republic of Ireland. This move is in response to recent announcements from the Irish government of incidents of dioxin contamination in pork products.
An Angolan official said that the decision was taken as a precautionary measure, based on the veterinary legislation, and done under the auspices of the World Animal Health Organization.
The move comes as it the Irish government revealed that contaminated Irish pig meat may have already been exported to over 25 countries. The dioxin contamination is said to have affected as many as 9 out of 10 Irish Piggeries and can be traced back to contaminated pig feed.
Experts have cautioned against panic and advice that although dioxins are carcinogenic the quantities involved here are too small to pose any significant risk.
