England had an uphill battle to face after South Africa’s heroics on the third day of the second. With South Africa posting a first innings of 522 to England’s 203 and restricting their hosts to 50-2 on the third day the day was all set for a South African triumph and the Proteas did not disappoint.
The day was not far gone before before South Africa’s sizzling attack got into their groove with Dale Steyn and Morne Monkel reaping damage through England’s batting order.
Alistair Cook went for 60, Kevin Pietersen for 13 and Bell for 4 by which time a defeat for England was certain all that remained undecided was the magnitude of the defeat. England’s batting tail end though had enough fight in them to avoid and innings defeat but left South Africa needing only nine runs to seal the test, which South Africa's Graeme Smith and Neil MacKenzie achieved with little sweat.
