South Africa’s President Thabo Mbeki has finally delivered on his softly softly approach to the tension and political problems in Zimbabwe as finally Robert Mugabe and Morgan Tsvangirai have agreed to hold talks on the future of Zimbabwe. The talks are scheduled to hold within the next two weeks.
The talks follow the protracted election crisis that has dogged Zimbabwe this year. The elections kicked off with the Parliamentary election which saw the ruling ZANU-PF lose its Parliamentary majority to the opposition MDC after a long delay in releasing the results.
Following on from this were the Presidential elections which saw Tsvangirai beat Mugabe but not with enough to avoid a run-off. The lead up to the run-off was plagued by violence and ultimately led to Tsvangirai withdrawing from the run-off claiming violence and incitement.
The talks will seek to resolve the resulting political impasse . At todays meeting Mugabe stressed he was looking for an African solution and Tsvangirai said he will put the interest of Zimbabweans at the forefront.
