Nigeria has raced ahead of South Africa to become the largest telecommunications market in Africa. Nigeria’s 47 million subscribers eclipse the 42.3 million in South Africa. Nigeria’s ascendancy is all the more remarkable considering that fifteen years ago the country had less than a quarter of a million active telephone lines.
The phenomenal growth in phone penetration in Nigeria has been achieved on the back of the the roll out of Mobile phone services in the late 90’s which now account for the vast majority of phone lines in the country.
