The Zambian government has denied reports that the country’s President Levy Mwanawasa had died after suffering a stroke. The Kenyan Broadcasting Corporation quoted the Zambian Vice President Rupiah Banda as saying "The president had (a) satisfactory night at the Percy military hospital in France. The news reports ... are not true,"

Earlier reports from several sources had reported the death of the President who had suffered a stroke while attending the African Union Summit in Sharm el-Shiekh in Egypt.

President Mwanawasa has been President of Zambia since 2002.
