Premiership team Portsmouth have made it to their first FA Final in over half a century with a 1 – 0 victory over West Bromwich Albion. It was not a match for purists but Portsmouth although playing poorly did enough to overcome an energetic West Brom.

The first half saw West Brom dominate most of the play, at one point having 68% of the possession to 32% for Portsmouth. Their failure to score or even create real chances after all that endeavour was ultimately to come back and hurt them.

On the 54th minute a shot from Portsmouth striker Milan Baros was scrambled out of the West Brom goal into the path of the Kanu, who coolly slotted it in. He is unlikely to be presented with an easier goal all season. West Brom fought back valiantly but the Portsmouth defence stood firm and ended West Brom’s hopes of a final appearance.

For Portsmouth the victory marks their first appearance in the FA Cup final since they won it in 1939 and gives Kanu a chance to add his already impressive array of cup medals including the two FA Cups he won while at Arsenal.
