The Malawian Anti Corruption Bureau (ACB) are seeking to haul former Malawian President Bakili Muluzi in for questioning over allegations that he siphoned off $11 million of donor money into a private account.
Speaking to news agencies, the director of ACB Alex Nampota said today “We have applied to the courts to remove an injunction he (Muluzi) obtained stopping us from questioning him because we are now ready to prosecute him on the $11 million found in his account,”
The allegations come at a tense moment in Malawian politics as the country prepares for the 2009 elections. Muluzi had served as Malawi’s President between 1994 and 2004 serving two terms and has announced his intention to seek office again in the 2009 elections.
His supporters believe the allegations are part of a political plot to derail his political comeback. Muluzi has had a long running feud with the current President Bingu wa Mutharika, a man he had picked as his successor but later fell out with.
