The second leg of the CAF Champions league was played this weekend and there were some big shocks as former champions Hearts of Oaks and Royal Armed Forces of Morocco crashed out.

Taking a three goal advantage to Praia in the Cape Verde Islands, the Royal Armed Forces FC must have thought they had done enough in Rabat to see them through. They hadn’t counted on the doggedness of the Sporting Praia. Goals from Tigana and Tchetcha in the first half and Yuri in the second half saw Sporting Praia draw level on aggregate. The resulting penalty shoot out saw Sporting Praia record what is arguably Cape Verde biggest club success.

Accra was the location of the second upset of the weekend, this time the roles were reversed. Hearts of Oaks had suffered a 3-0 thrashing last week in Libreville from FC105 Libreville and were looking for a spectacular reversal of fortune. They started off brightly with a goal from Michael Asante, but an away goal by Cedric Minsta compounded their problems. The Ghanaians were able to score two more goals through Kofi Abanga and Francis Bossman but qualification proved a bridge to far.

It was not all gloom for Ghana in Obuasi Ashanti Gold served up a 18-carat performance demolishing Sahel FC of Niger 6-1 with Nathaniel Quaye grabbing a brace.

Elsewhere former champions Nigeria’s Enyimba and Egypt’s Zamalek eased through to the second round. Enyimba beat Congo’s Diables Noirs 3-2 in Brazzaville while Zamalek defeated APR FC of Rwanda.
