South Africa is in uproar after a vile racist video surfaced on the internet. The video shows five elderly cleaners at the University of Free State being made to eat food that the students had secretly been urinated on. The cleaners had been told they were taking part in a game show, but the video was later overlaid with mocking commentary.
The four involved have been named by the University as Roelof Malherbe and Schalk van der Merwe both current students and Danie Grobler and Johnny Roberts who are former students. Additionally the University has reported the matter to the Director of Public Prosecutions and supplied a copy of video as evidence.
The University of Free State has a long held reputation as a bastion against integrated education in South Africa and is favoured by South Africa's Afrikaaner elite. It has in recent years made tentative moves towards opening itself up to all racial groups but progress had been slow and as this incident illustrates there is a lot of resistance from within to change.
Trade Unions and Students Association are planning a series of protests to not only condemn the incident but highlight the fact that racial offences perpetuated by white South African still occur regularly.
In a subsequent development lawyers for the four accused have said the all incidents in the video were play acting and the urination incident was actually done with a bottle of water.
