The American President George Bush ended his six day trip to Africa with a state visit to Liberia where he had talks with Africa's first elected female President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf.

The modern state of Liberia was founded by freed slaves resettled there by the American government and is one of America's staunchest allies in Africa. Liberia has been the only country in Africa that has welcomed the creation of the American military initiative for Africa, Africom, and has offered to host the headquarters.

George Bush had used his trip to Liberia to praise the country's efforts in recovering from the devastating civil war pledging US support to tackle poverty and disease, as well as announcing an education initiative which will see one million books, desks and seating for at least 10,000 students provided by the beginning of the next school year.

At the beginning of his African trip in Benin Republic where he spent just three hours the US President had used the opportunity to urge an end to the political crisis in Kenya although in the questions that followed he refused to be drawn by questions about how US subsidies were harming Beninoise farmers.

In Tanzania the President signed off on a US $700 million development grant which will help with development of electricity and water infrastructure. The money has come as a result of Tanzania meeting the criteria of the somewhat controversial Millennium Challenge initiative championed by George Bush.

In Rwanda the President visited a memorial in Kigali to the victims of the Rwandan genocide where over 250,000 people were killed. The President also pledged US$12 million to help with equipment and training for Rwandan peace keeping efforts in Darfur.

The penultimate destination of the President's trip was Ghana were the President received the honour of having the Mallan-Tetteh Quarshie Road in Accra renamed the George Bush Highway to mark his visit.

The Americans see the visit as an opportunity to show a more socially aware side to the American President and divert attention from really difficult issues like the quagmire in Iraq and Afghanistan and to an extent were somewhat successful in this respect, and so it was no surprise Bush was happy to dance to this as captured below.
