The crisis in Kenya has entered its second month with little sign of a lasting solution. While the level of violence has subsided, a long term political solution is yet to be hammered out and incidents like the reported bugging of Kofi Annan’s room will not help matters.
South Africa’s Independent Newspapers are reporting that several of their sources have claimed that listening devices were discovered in the Serena hotel room of Kofi Annan. The discovery of the devices are said to have further jeopardised an already frustrated peace mission undertaken by the former United Nations Secretary General.
Annan who has been in Kenya since the 15th January under the behest of the Africa Union has been leading talks to seek a political solution to the crisis that erupted after the election last December.
Negotiations talks have already suffered an earlier blow after South African business Tycoon Cyril Ramphosa who had been pencilled in to lead the negotiations over the long term was forced to withdraw. His withdrawal came after aides of the Kenya President Mwai Kibaki complained that Ramphosa had previous business links with opposition leader Raila Odinga.
Over 1000 people are believed to have died since fighting broke out over the disputed December 27 Kenyan Presidential election in which the incumbent President Kibaki claimed victory over his main challenger Odinga despite reports of widespread electoral fraud.
