Kenya’s Attorney-General Amos Wako has called for an independent inquiry into the recently concluded Presidential election. Wako said serious doubt have been established over the result of the Presidential election and as a consequence “A proper tally of the valid certificates returned and confirmed should be undertaken immediately and on a priority basis by an agreed and independent person or body.”
The Attorney- General’s position was buttressed by evidence from the electoral chief Samuel Kivuitu on how he was coerced into prematurely announcing the results.
The Attorney- General statement has been followed by a TV appearance from Mwai Kibaki this afternoon, the first since the crisis. In a prepared statement he said he was prepared to open discussions with the opposition but would only do so after the violence is brought to an end.
In remains to be seen if these overtures can quell the violence and bring about some form of normalcy to Kenya, the next few days will be crucial in this regard.
