The Spanish National Court sitting in Madrid passed sentence on the three main suspects in the Madrid bombing that killed 191 people and wounded over 1,800 when ten bombs exploded on packed commuter trains during the rush hour on March 11, 2004.
The three main suspects are Moroccans Jamal Zougam and Othman El Gnaoui and Spaniard Emilio Suarez. They were all found guilty of murder and attempted murder. Jamal Zougam had planted one of the train bombs, Othman El Gnaoui had coordinated the terrorist plot while Emilio Suarez had supplied the explosives used in the manufacture of the bombs.
The Madrid courts also found 21 others mostly Moroccans, guilty on a range of charges, but surprisingly acquitted Egyptian Rabei Osman Sayed Ahmed, who was allegedly recorded as having boasted about conceiving the Madrid attack.
Despite the extensive six month trial, Prosecutors were unable to unravel fully the extent of the conspiracy that lead to the worst act of Terrorism on Spanish soil. Those thought to be the main ringleaders blew themselves up in a flat in the Madrid suburb of Leganes after Spanish police had tracked them down and surrounded the building.
