The Cameroon government announced that it has chosen the Moroccan state owned water utility the Office National Eau Potable (ONEP) as the provisional winning bidder for its own state owned water firm the Societe National des Eaux du Cameroon.
Reports from Cameroon suggest the deal will be signed within a few days.
The privatisation of Cameroons water supply has been carried out at the instigation of the World Bank and Aid donors despite the poor track record privatising the supply of water in African has had. In 2005 the Tanzanian government was forced to cancel a $140m privatisation contract for supplying water to Dar Es Salaam and its environment after the British firm involved fail to meet targets.
