Nigerian start up airline announced one of the largest airplane purchase deals by an African airline. The deal with US Company Boeing is worth $1.8 billion and will see Arik airline take delivery of ten Next-Generation 737-800s, four 787-9s and one 777-300ER.
Last April Arik Air took delivery of two 737-700s and placed an order with Boeing for an additional two 777-200LRs, two 777-300ERs and three 787-9s.
"This additional order for Boeing jets demonstrates our commitment and a purposeful strategy to establish world-class commercial aviation service in Nigeria," said Arik's managing director Mike McTighe in a statement.
Arik Airlines aggressive fleet build up is set to make it one of the largest and most modern airlines in Nigeria, but the growth has not been without controversy.
Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on its website suggests there may be links between Arik Airline and former state governor Dr Peter Odili who is being investigated over allegations of misuse of N100 billion ($800 million) in public funds.
Spokesmen for Dr Odili have however repeatedly denied the link.
