South Africa's Music family suffered a huge loss on Monday as Kwaito star Lebo Mathosa died in a car crash at the age of 29.
Mathosa's manager Christos says her driver apparently lost control of her car on the N3 highway in Germiston outside of Johannesburg early Monday.
Kobeli Mokheseng, a police spokesperson, was also quoted as saying that the 29-year-old woman was killed when her driver lost control of her car between Grey Avenue and the Heidelberg off-ramp at 12.30am. "The car overturned and hit a tree on the side of the road." It is understood that the 20-year old driver survived unharmed.
Mathosa was known for combining African musical genres such as Kwaito with jazz and rhythm and blues.
She rose to fame as a teenager in 1994 with the Kwaito band Boom Shaka. Mathosa released her first solo album, Dream, in 2001 and another, called Drama Queen, in 2004. The albums won numerous South African Music Awards and African MTV Awards including best dance album, best dance single and best female vocalist.
Mathosa also acted in several South African television series including Backstage, Muvhango and Generations, and also appeared in a feature film called Soldiers of the Rock that played at international film festivals.
South Africa's Minister of Arts and Culture, Pallo Jordan, issued a tribute to Mathosa Monday, calling her the "outstanding vocal leader of her generation." and President Mbeki said her untimely death constituted a profound loss to the entire nation. Mathosa is to be buried this weekend in her hometown of Daveyton.
